About the Elliot Lake Arts Club

In 1977, the Club tested the waters when it hosted the first regional conference of the Ontario Crafts Council at the Elliot Lake Centre, with great success. Over the years, the members of the Arts Club have organized two WASOON conferences for members of the Ontario Handspinners and Weavers, two Watercolour Symposiums for the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, the Water Project (a province-wide undertaking with the Ontario Society of Artists) and a second OCC conference.

The annual Christmas Show and Sale has been opportunity for members to strut their stuff, while the North of 17 arts and craft exhibition has invited artists from all over northeastern Ontario to enter their best work for jurying by a panel of independent judges. Innovation and excellence are the criteria for acceptance into this show. To encourage younger artists, the Viola Moody award is presented annually to an outstanding high school student in the visual arts. With children in mind, members of the Arts Club painted a series of murals for the pediatric wing of the hospital, and continue to offer workshops for kids on a regular basis.

With little money, but lots of ideas and enthusiasm, a few members of the Arts Club organized the first Deer Trail Studio Tour in the fall of 1984. This has grown to such an extent that it has become an independent entity that attracts about 2000 visitors annually to this area.
