Keynote Speaker: Lissa Hunter
Uncommon Things: 25 Years of Making Objects
Taking traditional basketry to a new dimension is risky business but Lissa Hunter has broken out of the form of the coiled basket and taken the sculptural possibilities far beyond its simple beginnings. With painting and drawing playing an increasingly important role, Lissa's ground-breaking work traverses a wide terrain, from political commentary to intimate autobiography. During her presentation on Saturday evening, Lissa will share images of her work and talk about "more than technique and materials and more about ideas - the importance of design and craftsmanship and how lucky I am to be doing what I do".
Lissa's work is in many collections, including the Smithsonian, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Art & Design in New York. She has taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design, the Arrowmont School in Tennessee, the Haystack School in Maine as well as setting up a graduate programme for the Maine College of Art. She has also served on various arts boards and has been the recipient of fellowships and residencies. Lissa Hunter, Histories Real and Imagined, is a recent book by Abby Johnston that features a compelling retrospective of Lissa's career.
